an unsuccessful departure, overthought and overworked (a reoccurring theme, it seems) - but movement none the less.

i'll be in southern utah all next week so no posts till after that. but plenty of red rock upon return. i promise.

top three are "what ifs" (living by a word), then the latter five are par for the course, save for one of plants from a stop on the road (if only we could sit and paint flowers without being elderly or insane all would be all right).

sorry it's not much, but it's all i have for you:

if anyone has any suggestions on how to maintain the color/light of a drawing like this and the third one from yesterday's post when scanning, please advise. with simple pen drawings (meaning no added color to provide contrast) the image gets terribly washed out and i cannot maintain the hue of the paper (brown) - same paper as seen in the drawings from august 10.
i am working on an HP consumer model scanner. i know, i know, but it's what i've got.
much obliged.

top three things learned this weekend:
1. rapidograph over gouache is cut butter
2. hard edge bubble letters are a useful but spent trope
3. watch the road

p.s. my scanner is acting up.

a risk. a few of these are experiments, in progress, and are well on the road to failure. but. learning a thing or two about failure recently, i've decided to keep trying. if not for the final product, for the process.

July 14, 2008

a month or so ago, in bob hope airport, on a plane trip from la to oakland, i lost a moleskin. as i remember it, it contained some of the best sketches to date. more likely it contained maybe 3 or 4 warbly attempts at neck napes and a couple thoughts on narcissism. the airport lost and found claimed they had it, and sent it to me. but what i got in the mail was not mine. it was a lined moleskin containing classroom notes on two things:
art history and sexual reproduction.
judging by the handwriting and equal focus on both topics, i am going to assume this moleskin was owned by a female.
if this is your moleskin, please let me know.
if you have my moleskin, please let me know.
we can trade back.
i promise, i only tore out the good parts.

A momentary departure from the commute: WASHATERIA, Guererro Street

Teresa Geary (who everyone should be lucky enough to know) asked me to be in a show she curated with Intersection for the Arts. Here are shots from the 3 hour long drawing marathon in which i drew, erased, drew, and erased portaits of people currently incarcerated on the window of the most famous laundomat in the Mission, Washateria. Thanks Mary and Katka for the photos.
