the drive to GOOD magazine's offices in LA (our hosts for the making of issue one.)

proper diet of pop chips, pizza, ice cream sandwiches, beer and coffee.

around 600 submissions came in from all over the world within 24 hours - a crew of 50 people spent the next 24 reviewing, selecting, editing, arranging, photographing, illustrating, designing and laying out the magazine.

Alexis Madrigal, Mat Honan and Sarah Rich - founders and editors of Longshot - working through the night before close.

down to the minute, the magazine (along with a website and ipad version) was finished at 12pm on Sunday, August 30.

and then everyone went home.

Longshot magazine (formerly known as 48hour magazine until CBS sent a cease and desist) is happening again this weekend. In case you missed it last time, the basic idea is this: a bunch of people create a magazine in 48 hours. A theme is announced, contributors create original content fast, the submissions are culled, edited, laid out and the magazine ships - all within 48 hours. I was lucky enough to work with them on Issue Zero out of Mother Jones' office SF, and this time I am heading to LA with the crew to work out of GOOD magazine's office. Check back over the weekend for artistic record of the event.

Meantime, an aside: one quarter of Issue Zero's earnings became the winnings in a treasure hunt in SF. The money has already been found, but hopefully the treasure map I drew for it is still useful as a guide to a good walk around a landmark on a sunny day.

August 13, 2010

thanks to everyone who came out to the opening for the installation at shoebiz last night.

below are a few shots from the opening party, the walls and a couple of the paintings - the drawing wraps round the whole shop, 360, and has paintings nailed the wall, on the drawing. and there is writing. lots of writing. i'll take more detailed shots of the work itself and post them soon.

and if you are in sf and you have not seen it yet, head over to shoebiz on the haight (the dinosaur one) - the show will be up through september. but this weekend is the best time to go. lots of free stuff due to the whole onitsuka tiger/outside lands thing, and i have some original prints (meaning i drew on each print, pretty much) in there for sale on the cheap.

also, thanks to katie at juxtapoz for a really flattering article in advance of the show. i hope the work did not disappoint.

rephrase that - here is the flier for the opening night with all correct info (the party is sponsored by oitsuka tiger/asics, hence the asics sneaker and not the adidas sneaker. and yes, i believe that does make me a sell out.) if you are in sf, swing by and say hi.
